Summary

IN THE FINAL RECKONING, CHOOSE YOUR SIDE CAREFULLY…
The epic conclusion to the globally bestselling historical series。
After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria。 With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure – yet Uhtred is far from safe。 Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages。

To the south, King Æthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia – and now eyes a bigger prize。 To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion。

Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred。 Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced。 Only fate can decide the outcome。

The epic story of how England was made concludes in WAR LORD, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series。

Cornwell's Patrick O'Brien, but's he's quite close, and he does grim far more ably。 Cornwell also does landscapes perhaps better than louis L'Amour, many of whose landscapes I've personally clambered across。I am still amazed that we Yanks (actually, Mason-Dixon border staters) got him away from Britain。 Cornwell's Patrick O'Brien, but's he's quite close, and he does grim far more ably。 Cornwell also does landscapes perhaps better than louis L'Amour, many of whose landscapes I've personally clambered across。I am still amazed that we Yanks (actually, Mason-Dixon border staters) got him away from Britain。 。。。more

I wish I could convey the absolute glee with which I devour these books。

Satisfying conclusion to a wonderful set of historical fiction。 Highly recommended。

This is the 22nd Bernard Cornwell book I've read and。。。the man has a formula and sticks to it。。。and I'm not mad about it。 This one drags a tiny bit until the end (the obligatory battle) and Cornwell really does write those scenes extraordinarily。 He manages to make them seems majestic and unglamorous at the same time。 This is also a bit sad since it's the apparent end of this series。 Guess I'll need to find another series in this era。。。or another era。。。 This is the 22nd Bernard Cornwell book I've read and。。。the man has a formula and sticks to it。。。and I'm not mad about it。 This one drags a tiny bit until the end (the obligatory battle) and Cornwell really does write those scenes extraordinarily。 He manages to make them seems majestic and unglamorous at the same time。 This is also a bit sad since it's the apparent end of this series。 Guess I'll need to find another series in this era。。。or another era。。。 。。。more

A fantastic finish to a great series!

I have read the entire series in the last few months and have been presently surprised by the fact that it was consistently great across all twelve novels。

A wonderful end to the series, as always Cornwell mixes history and fiction masterfully。

Great series about the history of England, with some unique characters to make it an exciting read。

A very fitting end for a brilliant series。 I wasn't really sure how I wanted it to end but this was pretty perfect, with Uhtred fighting to the last。 It was good to see Steapa again, he's one of my favourites, and this tied up so many characters so well。 The final battle was brilliant, and this book had everything I loved about the series in it。 Such a fantastic ending。 A very fitting end for a brilliant series。 I wasn't really sure how I wanted it to end but this was pretty perfect, with Uhtred fighting to the last。 It was good to see Steapa again, he's one of my favourites, and this tied up so many characters so well。 The final battle was brilliant, and this book had everything I loved about the series in it。 Such a fantastic ending。 。。。more

A fitting conclusion to a series of novels which for me was quite the equal of the Sharpe series - although personally, I find this period of history a little more interesting as a setting, as I know less about it。 This final novel also included an overview at the end of how much of the story here (and also the series) is historically based and what is fiction (that's a nice feature of most of Cornwell's historical fiction)。 I have found this series an interesting way to learn a little bit more A fitting conclusion to a series of novels which for me was quite the equal of the Sharpe series - although personally, I find this period of history a little more interesting as a setting, as I know less about it。 This final novel also included an overview at the end of how much of the story here (and also the series) is historically based and what is fiction (that's a nice feature of most of Cornwell's historical fiction)。 I have found this series an interesting way to learn a little bit more about Britain and Ireland's pre-1066 history。 And it's been great fun。 Well done Mr。 Cornwell! There was just one thing I found potentially inconsistent。 I seem to remember that in the very first novel in the series we were told that Uhtred was writing down these stories from in a monastery。 I may be wrong though, it was some years since I read the first in the series。 A minor quibble anyway。 I enjoyed this final episode as much as I enjoyed the rest of the saga。 Not my favourite book of the series, but not my least favourite either。 。。。more

I stalled when it came to reading this because I knew it would be bittersweet。 I was excited to read the conclusion to this series but did not want it to end。 I was also nervous with anticipation wondering if any of my favorite characters would go to Valhalla。 Since this is the last of the Saxon Stories I am rating it high because the entire series is EXCELLENT。 I don’t remember ever hearing details about the making of England before and the historical mixed in with the fiction is done so incred I stalled when it came to reading this because I knew it would be bittersweet。 I was excited to read the conclusion to this series but did not want it to end。 I was also nervous with anticipation wondering if any of my favorite characters would go to Valhalla。 Since this is the last of the Saxon Stories I am rating it high because the entire series is EXCELLENT。 I don’t remember ever hearing details about the making of England before and the historical mixed in with the fiction is done so incredibly well。 Thank you Bernard for bringing this history to life in such an entertaining way。 SPOILER—Before even getting into the story I read the dedication to Alexander Dreymon and was amazed。 That was generous to pay tribute to the actor who has taken the character of Uhtred to the next level。 Awesome。It’s crazy thinking how much time has passed and Uhtred never ceased to be at war, of course he rarely had a choice in the matter。 I don’t know much when it comes to history with battles so I don’t know how believable it is that he was about 80 years old and dragged into it all over again。 I would have liked to have seen him as a commander behind a shield wall。 He was a King-maker for many years and suffered personal losses。 It seems my heart is consistently broken for him。 What’s a warlord have to do to be left in peace? He deserves a spa day…or two。 All the while he fought and earned his own birthright to rule in Bebbanburg and it continues to be a coveted fortress。 There are threats from all sides and he is stuck in the middle。 War is coming to Northumbria…leading up to the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced—The Battle of Brunanburgh。 I liked reading about grown-up Aethelstan and remembering all of the previous kings Uhtred has served beside and outlived。 I enjoyed Uhtred’s wife Benedetta standing up for him—such a feisty woman。 Yet, Gisela is still my favorite。He had a nightmare of fighting a dragon which pretty much sums up his life。 I loved the imagery of it。 King Hywel asked: “Do you suffer from aches, Lord Uhtred?” Uhtred: “Frequently, lord king。” King Hywel: “Goat’s [pee]! Rub it in, man, rub it in。 It might even improve the way you smell!”More ancient body parts from saints—Saint Lucy was blinded before martyrdom and the pope sent the king one of her eyes。 Fraomar: “It’s miraculous! It hasn’t shriveled and Lucy died seven hundred years ago! I’m sure the king will be pleased to show it to you。” Uhtred: “I can’t wait。” Love the sarcasm。 He was told to swear the truth about something (which I will not spoil)—Father Swithun: “Swear on Lazarus toenail。” Uhtred: “I’ll swear it on your toenails。”Uhtred, son of Uhtred—you will be missed。 You will always be a Warrior King to me。 Dressed in his war-glory, his brightest mail, the helmet with the silver wolf snarling at the crown, his arm rings glittering, high boots polished, a golden hammer at his breast, a silver plated sword belt from which serpent-breath hung。 I will miss the shield wall and one of the best bromances—Uhtred and Finan。 I am now in mourning。 Guess I will have to start from the beginning again。 Wyrd bið ful āræd—Destiny is all。 。。。more

The end to a series that has kept me engrossed all these years, one that I eagerly awaited the next in the series every year。 While I think it was time for the series to end, I am still saddened to be ending my adventures with Uhtred and it will leave a void in my reading life, one that will take a lot to fill。 I have followed Uhtred since the first book and what a wild ride it has been!

Back-to-back Last in the series reads……Before I start I must say this is a series ive mostly enjoyed although I do feel its been over long after the grand adventure & excitement of the opening books。 I also feel that after Alfred exited, the series lost a great character (as a foil) for Uhtred。 So although I will miss the series I think it’s not before time that we come to the end…。。Aftermath…… It all came together in the end, as we knew it would one day, with King Athelstan of Wessex, Mercia & Back-to-back Last in the series reads……Before I start I must say this is a series ive mostly enjoyed although I do feel its been over long after the grand adventure & excitement of the opening books。 I also feel that after Alfred exited, the series lost a great character (as a foil) for Uhtred。 So although I will miss the series I think it’s not before time that we come to the end…。。Aftermath…… It all came together in the end, as we knew it would one day, with King Athelstan of Wessex, Mercia & East Anglia moving to bring Northumberland into the fold to create England as we still know it。 This book brings all the main players to the table be they the Welsh, the Scots, the Vikings in Cumbria, More Norse in Ireland the Orkneys & York, King Athelstan & finally Uhtred himself who controlled the piece that everyone desired, that of the fortress of Bebbanburg。 Not going to go into any detail…… have to say I found it decidedly ordinary, which means standard fare/formulae for a book in this series where perhaps I was expecting summit different, or out of the ordinary for the finale which we certainly didn’t get。 In that I was disappointed。 It did though give a satisfactory conclusion to the series but when I think back on the series as a whole, this book could have come a lot sooner for sure but I guess the author had waaaaaay too much fun with Uhtred & jus didn’t want to let go…。。3。5 stars jus rounded upto a four, the whole series I’d weigh in with a solid four which was balanced on a lot of earlier books being straight 5’s whilst the later hitting the 3’s for the most part。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Hi Dear Bernard: I hope if you can read my short gratitude。 Thank you for your 13 books of Uhtred in the last 15 years。 Like Uhtred’s life story, I was growing up like a fool, an idiot, and a loser in career, in love and in family life。 These books help me to accept the misery, the failure and my own fate, so I could continously go forward。 I also learn so much about the history of England and inernational politics。 Because from the place where I live and love, its location is like Bebbanburg in Hi Dear Bernard: I hope if you can read my short gratitude。 Thank you for your 13 books of Uhtred in the last 15 years。 Like Uhtred’s life story, I was growing up like a fool, an idiot, and a loser in career, in love and in family life。 These books help me to accept the misery, the failure and my own fate, so I could continously go forward。 I also learn so much about the history of England and inernational politics。 Because from the place where I live and love, its location is like Bebbanburg in Northumbria where is closed to England but facing Scotland。 I wish God could take good care of our place and giva us peace。 國王Athelstan 在抱著代他被殺的主教,悲傷告訴Uhtred “Lord Uhtred, I am sorry” 國王又說 “ I am sorry,” 。Uhtred 面對國王與死去的兒子的話說不出來,”We had made our peace, lord King。” (我們才剛剛達成合解,國王陛下)“ Then tomorrow we will make war,” (那麼明天我們就來一場戰爭)Athelstan 生氣的說 “a terrible war, and we will avenge his dead。” 。。。more

“Uhtred of Bebbanburg” may have been my son’s name if I had read all of these books before he was born。 This is one of my top series of all time。 It ranks the same as LOTR and frankly above ASOIAF (although on the off chance GRRM finishes it, maybe it will reign supreme)。 The characters are believable, the historical accuracy is excellent, and explicitly explained in thorough detail when it isn’t。 Tracing the roots of England through the Saxon Era is thrilling and a wonderfully colorful telling。 “Uhtred of Bebbanburg” may have been my son’s name if I had read all of these books before he was born。 This is one of my top series of all time。 It ranks the same as LOTR and frankly above ASOIAF (although on the off chance GRRM finishes it, maybe it will reign supreme)。 The characters are believable, the historical accuracy is excellent, and explicitly explained in thorough detail when it isn’t。 Tracing the roots of England through the Saxon Era is thrilling and a wonderfully colorful telling。 Instead of naming children, maybe I’ll just settle for a “wyrd bith ful araed” tattoo。 。。。more

Bernard Cornwell never disappoints。 The historic elements in this, the latest (final?) book in the Last Kingdom saga, serve to make the drama and grit even more engaging。 The great amount of time he takes in his research of the era and locations where the story occurs pays off with stunningly accurate descriptions that keep the reader deeply engaged in the story。 As always, I look forward to whatever stories he presents in his next endevor。

How sad this is the end of a truly brilliant series! I've really enjoyed every one of these books - in fact, every book written by Bernard Cornwell。 They may not be literary masterpieces but they're rattling good stories that really take you into what it must have been like。 Looking forward to what's coming next from this author。 How sad this is the end of a truly brilliant series! Last in the series。 I will miss Uhtred。 I have really enjoyed the 13 novel series spanning over ten years or so。 I understand the history of Britain slightly better now, having read the books and have been thorough engaged by the excellently portrayed characters。 Our hero Uhtred wasn't right all the time, and the Kings that he battled mentally with, sometimes out thought him, but Uhtred's undying sense of fairness always seemed to shine, (and win) through。 Thoroughly recommended。 Last in the series。 I will miss Uhtred。 I have really enjoyed the 13 novel series spanning over ten years or so。 I understand the history of Britain slightly better now, having read the books and have been thorough engaged by the excellently portrayed characters。 Our hero Uhtred wasn't right all the time, and the Kings that he battled mentally with, sometimes out thought him, but Uhtred's undying sense of fairness always seemed to shine, (and win) through。 Thoroughly recommended。 。。。more
